RAISED BED GARDENS!

Raised bed gardens are easy to source or make and are an excellent idea for an urban organic garden.I have been obsessed with doing a few raised bed gardens since I moved into a townhouse in the city.It seems to be the most time and space efficient way to fulfil my gardening fetish without digging up the lawn.

WHAT ADVANTAGES DOES A RAISED GARDEN BED HAVE?

  • Great for growing small plots of veges or flowers.
  • Keeps pathway weeds and grasses from garden beds.
  • They prevent soil compaction by keeping soils aerated.
  • Keeps soil from eroding and washing away.
  • Raised garden beds provide excellent drainage.
  • They provide protection against slugs and snails.
  • You can plant earlier as the soil is warm and better drained when above ground.
  • Raised garden beds mean no digging and are easier to maintain with little bending.
  • Raised garden beds are great for the older gardener or those with bad backs as you can sit comfortably whilst you plant, weed and water.

Raised garden beds sit on top of the soil.Raised garden planter boxes have a slatted bottom and sit above the soil. They usually have a semi permeable covering at the base to allow for drainage. So a raised garden bed or a raised garden box? The choice depends on the available space you have to work with.As I am renting a townhouse in the city at the moment,I am going with a raised garden planter box.

Happy Gardening!

VEGETABLE GARDEN – APARTMENT STYLE!

My latest frugal find allows me to start my well planned vegetable garden – apartment style.I have seen a number of ‘raised bed garden kits’ at my local garden supply shop and the internet.Being ‘Queen of Frugal’ in this current chapter of my life,I could not possibly part with the crazy amount of money they are asking for a pine wood box.I have scoured the streets for weeks looking for the elusive wooden pallet that may have been discarded, thinking I might grab a hammer and nail and make my own!

Having no luck in finding any discarded pellets,I thought I had better submit and buy a kit to start my Spring vegetable garden – apartment style. Then I discovered this incredible pine packing box at my sister’s house.Destined for the dump I rescued this little beauty to be re-used and recycled.

Watch this space as I magically transform this packing crate into a stunning raised bed vegetable garden – apartment style!

All that is needed now a quick paintjob to fit into my townhouse/apartment life and an old sack, some good quality friable potting mix combined with some great fertilizers.A good soak, some vege seedlings and some mulch.

Photo Tribute to My Dad!

As mentioned in the article below,my Father died thirty one years ago when I was just seventeen.I grew up by the beach at Redcliffe in Queensland,Australia.I am the youngest of six children and my Dad was twenty eight when I was born.

My father came from a rural town and loved the bush.Settling by the Bay with his family,he quickly adapted and embraced the ocean and all it had to offer. We grew up on fresh fish, crabs, prawns and calamari.

Schucking oysters of the rocks was one of my favourite things to do with my father. We would go for hours and hours.Eventually, I’d get bored and wonder around the rocks playing imaginary games.Dad would be calling out “Move closer to shore – the tide’s coming in.”

My father would be shocked at the changes on the foreshore now. Here’s a photo tribute to my father – Norman James Henrickson.May your soul be eternally blessed. Thanks Dad,for those awesome long afternoons of oyster picking off the rocks at Redcliffe and the deep knowledge and love of the ocean that you instilled in me.Not to mention my fishing and crabbing skils.Rest in Peace!

GET YOUR ROSE GARDEN BLOOMING!

Spring is here and the time has come to nurture your roses.Roses are such a wonderfully rewarding flower to grow. They are a beauty to the eye and the aroma of a home-grown rose is a delight.Roses are not as difficult to grow as you may have imagined.A few simple steps at the start of spring and a little maintenance and you will have the most incredible blooms.Leave them in the garden or pick them for your home.

SPRING TIME TIPS FOR GROWING ROSES

  • Clear the rose beds of any weeds and garden debris like leaves.Treat any disease i.e.fungii
  • Prune off any dead wood and any spindly winding canes.
  • If the roses are still dormant give them a quick spray with Lime Sulphur to get rid of that nasty fungus!
  • Add fertilizers to boos t the soil.Add compost and my favourite – Charlie Carp or Seasol – for some surefire results.Add some sand and mushroom compost. You are aiming for a rich enzyme packed, friable soil.
  • Top off with some mulch.I use sugar cane mulch with great results.Mini pine bark is also a good choice.
  • Fertilize when the rose plant shows new growth.Alfafa tea is a great organic choice.
  • A great way to add a boost to new growth by adding a half a cup of Epsom Salts to the base of each plant and water in well.
  • Roses need at least an inch of water a week for beautiful scented blooms.Water roses at the base of the plant only.
  • Protect your roses from disease by removing spent blooms, keeping the beds clean and well watered and remove spent or ill leaves.Spray with a fungicide as needed.Water only at the base of the plant and not on the leaves or blooms!

Now you can sit back and wait for a spectacular display of colour and scent from your wonderful rose garden!

Are you a KIND person?

“We cannot do great things on this earth, only small things with great love.” Mother Theresa

Did you know that being kind to others increases your own level of happiness as well as theirs? Being a kind and happy person helps build a kind and happy community.Recent research into the functioning of a healthy human brain has revealed that we are programmed or hardwired for love and compassion.Forget the “It’s all about me”.Newsflash – it isn’t! Our communities and society actually flourish when people look out for each other.

BEING KIND….

  • Being kind to those we know strengthens our connections with them and provides a source of support.
  • Research shows that we gain more personally from giving support than those receiving it.
  • If we are a kind and giving person we are more likely to receive kindness and support when we need it.
  • Being kind to others builds a wider support network which generally increases a sense of well being all around.
  • Random acts of kindness to strangers builds a sense of trust, safety and co-operation in our communities.
  • Kindness also allows us to see others in a more positive way and develops empathy.

Being kind is at the cornerstone of the foundation of a thriving community and society that fosters well being all around. Are you a kind person who frequently practises random acts of kindness? You should be – it is so good for your health and well being!
