RAISED BED GARDENS!
Raised bed gardens are easy to source or make and are an excellent idea for an urban organic garden.I have been obsessed with doing a few raised bed gardens since I moved into a townhouse in the city.It seems to be the most time and space efficient way to fulfil my gardening fetish without digging up the lawn.
WHAT ADVANTAGES DOES A RAISED GARDEN BED HAVE?
- Great for growing small plots of veges or flowers.
- Keeps pathway weeds and grasses from garden beds.
- They prevent soil compaction by keeping soils aerated.
- Keeps soil from eroding and washing away.
- Raised garden beds provide excellent drainage.
- They provide protection against slugs and snails.
- You can plant earlier as the soil is warm and better drained when above ground.
- Raised garden beds mean no digging and are easier to maintain with little bending.
- Raised garden beds are great for the older gardener or those with bad backs as you can sit comfortably whilst you plant,weed and water.
Raised garden beds sit on top of the soil.Raised garden planter boxes have a slatted bottom and sit above the soil.They usually have a semi permeable covering at the base to allow for drainage.So a raised garden bed or a raised garden box? The choice depends on the available space you have to work with.As I am renting a townhouse in the city at the moment,I am going with a raised garden planter box.

GET YOUR ROSE GARDEN BLOOMING!
Spring is here and the time has come to nurture your roses.Roses are such a wonderfully rewarding flower to grow.They are a beauty to the eye and the aroma of a home-grown rose is a delight.Roses are not as difficult to grow as you may have imagined.A few simple steps at the start of spring and a little maintenance and you will have the most incredible blooms.Leave them in the garden or pick them for your home.
SPRING TIME TIPS FOR GROWING ROSES
- Clear the rose beds of any weeds and garden debris like leaves.Treat any disease i.e.fungii
- Prune off any dead wood and any spindly winding canes.
- If the roses are still dormant give them a quick spray with Lime Sulphur to get rid of that nasty fungus!
- Add fertilizers to boos t the soil.Add compost and my favourite – Charlie Carp or Seasol – for some surefire results.Add some sand and mushroom compost.You are aiming for a rich enzyme packed,friable soil.
- Top off with some mulch.I use sugar cane mulch with great results.Mini pine bark is also a good choice.
- Fertilize when the rose plant shows new growth.Alfafa tea is a great organic choice.
- A great way to add a boost to new growth by adding a half a cup of Epsom Salts to the base of each plant and water in well.
- Roses need at least an inch of water a week for beautiful scented blooms.Water roses at the base of the plant only.
- Protect your roses from disease by removing spent blooms,keeping the beds clean and well watered and remove spent or ill leaves.Spray with a fungicide as needed.Water only at the base of the plant and not on the leaves or blooms!
Now you can sit back and wait for a spectacular display of colour and scent from your wonderful rose garden!

SPRING FLOWER GARDEN
Have you started work on your Spring Flower Garden ? Spring is the most amazing time for all gardeners.I particularly love Spring flowers.An early evening walk is a true delight as the scents from the beautiful early Spring flowers fill the air.
It’s time to get to work as your garden wakes up from it’s long Winter hibernation.The end result is well worth the effort.To get you motivated here is a list of necessary tasks that need conquering.Your Spring flower garden will be blooming in no time.
PRUNING
- Prune all dead wood from shrubs.
- Prune your roses and azealeas.
- Prune any unwanted branches from your trees.
- Deadhead all spent flowers and seeding flowerheads.
- Deadhead all flowers from bulbs but leave the bulbs in the ground at this time.
- Weed all of your garden beds and borders because the weeds are ready to take off.
- Dig up the gardens and add fertilizers.Water the soil to prepare for planting
- Get composting! Tend to that compost pile you have ignored all Winter.
- Turn the pile frequently and add new organic material.
TOOLS
- Time to maintain and clean all of your garden tools to get ready for Summer.
- Go out and replace any tools that need to be replaced.
- Get planting! Time to choose your plants for your Spring flower garden.
- Don’t forget to plant some vegetables,shrubs,annuals and herbs.
FERTILIZER AND MULCH
- Fertilize and mulch your beds and borders.
- Fertilize your fruit trees and shrubs.
STAKING
- Stake any plants needing additional support to flower or fruit.
LAWN CARE
- Mow and and trim the lawn.Not too low.
- Add lawn seed to patchy areas.
- Aerate the soil with a garden fork to allow moisture to travel to the roots.
